Lake District, Halfterm Holidays and Levens Hall

Halfterm was spent on the shores of Derwent Water. Our base was in Rosthwaite and we planned several walks and days out with the children. One of the highlights for me was a morning spent with the Head Gardener of Levens Hall near Kendal, home of the Bagot family and some of the most amazing topiary I have ever seen. All in all, it was a very good week of fresh air and lots of time outside.

The Beginning

The move out of London years ago changed many aspects of our lives; there was space to run around, we got a dog, we savoured falling leaves and bonfires, those little things which all add up to create memories remembered long after the fire has died. But the most important thing for me is that it prompted an entire change of career. The days spent valuing items and sending fine art across the globe changed to long days spent sowing sweet pea seeds in October, listening to the sound of rain hitting the roof of the greenhouse, relishing aching arm muscles gotten from turning compost heaps and of the pleasure of eating something freshly picked. My daughter became an expert at decimating a crop of fresh peas even faster than the pigeons and we all grew to like stewed rhubarb.
